History

Kau Hospital, in Pahala, is a 21-bed facility of primarily skilled nursing and intermediate care beds and 5 acute beds.  Replacing a former plantation hospital, the current hospital was built in 1971 to serve the needs of this vast rural area, located approximately 25 miles beyond Volcanoes National Park Headquarters.  Ka'u Hospital became a CAH (Critical Access Hospital) July 2001. We employ a staff of 33, with services that include:
  • 24-hour Emergency Services
  • Adult Day Health Program
  • Pharmacy
  • Radiology
  • Laboratory
  • Family Practice Outpatient Clinic
