It originally opened in 1884 as "Malulani" (Protection of Heaven) by Queen Kapiolani. In 1927, the County of Maui assumed financial responsibility for Malulani Hospital. In 1952, a new 140-bed Central Maui Memorial Hospital, dedicated to Maui's fallen veterans, opened its doors.
In 1956, with the closing of Paia, Puunene, and Lahaina plantation hospitals, all acute hospital care was consolidated under Central Maui Memorial Hospital. In 1963, the hospital changed its name to Maui Memorial Hospital and, in 1966, operations were transferred from the County of Maui's purview to the State of Hawaii. In 1998, the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation was created by the Legislature to oversee the administration of MMH and the other 11 rural hospitals, then under the control of the Department of Health, Division of Community Hospitals. In 1998, Maui Memorial Hospital was renamed Maui Memorial Medical Center to reflect the broader range of services it offered.
MMMC employs more than 1000 employees and has 200 attending physicians, and it is also supported through community donations to non-profit organizations: MMMC Foundation and Hospital Auxiliary
A new wing was opened in October 2007. The 75,000 sq. ft. Kahului Tower has four levels. With the addition of the new wing, the total bed count for the hospital is 231 and many of the existing floors on the Wailuku Tower are being upgraded too.
